About Smart Barcelona

Again Smart Barcelona has offered us the great opportunity to bring Science to our children in a surprising way. In this case, "Surgery" program has been the protagonist.

It may sound daring that an activity dedicated to the little ones may be related to the world of "green coats." Is it possible? Well, we could assure you that since the results were very interesting. The children's faces conveyed much satisfaction. Given that the main scale for measuring intensity and motivation could be based on the desire to explain everything they had done, we can assure you that these activities were a great success.

Following the previous format, the day was structured in four workshops.

The first was the removal of the appendix in the appendicitis phase. A challenge of skill where the previous palpation, following the established method, and the subsequent removal, will make our patient can leave the operation unscathed. And then he was given vials for later recovery.

The second workshop had a tumor removed from another patient located in the abdominal region. Before starting the incision, blood samples were analyzed through the microscope where our little doctors found tumor markers. Then, and without delaying the intervention, they proceeded to excision of the tumor with great success.

In the third workshop, another patient was admitted to the emergency department with a tracheal obstruction and the young surgeons performed a tracheotomy. Surely it was a time of high tension because the patient was not completely sedated.

And finally, in the fourth workshop the maxillofacial surgeons implanted some dental pieces. Of course, our dentists had to make a mold of the mouth and then adjust the piece with a screw in the jaw. The ultraviolet light facilitated the drying of the final filling.

While the surgeons were in their chores, the parents were very attentive with another masterful exhibition and contest on topics related to Health.

So that nobody is scared, evidently the patients were dolls, the Lidocaine was water and the blood water with red dye.

If someone asks me for advice on these activities, the first thing I am going to tell you is that the best way for our children to get to know the world of Science up close. In a few places we will find a method as extraordinary as they do in Smart Barcelona. And how can it be otherwise, the fact that they can share these experiences with real scientists gives extra value to the activities.
